Three players make our side for the first time this season, with one debutant being the Cameroon striker, who was the catalyst in Chelsea’s second-half display against Tottenham
Chelsea extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points following a 4-0 win over Tottenham, while at the other end of the table, Cardiff secured victory over Fulham in crucial relegation clash.
With the FA Cup quarter-final ties in action over the weekend, there were only five Premier League fixtures on Saturday but here are the best performers from the top flight.
Asmir Begovic (3) makes it into our Team of the Week for the fourth time this season following his string of saves in Stoke’s 1-1 draw at Norwich City.
Rafael (3.5) is picked at right-back following his solid defensive contribution in Manchester United’s 3-0 win over West Brom. The Brazilian also provided a fine cross to set up Wayne Rooney’s goal.
Steven Caulker (3.5) was a key figure in Cardiff’s 3-1 win over Fulham. The defender put Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men in the lead twice and was part of a rigid defence which kept Felix Magath’s side relatively quiet.
John Terry (3) makes his third Team of the Week appearance this term for leading Chelsea to a clean sheet against Tottenham. The former England captain also had the measure of Emmanuel Adebayor for the majority of the contest at Stamford Bridge.
Surprisingly, Luke Shaw (4) makes it into our Team of the Week for the first time this season. The 18-year-old built on his England debut in midweek with a dynamic display in Southampton’s 1-0 win at Crystal Palace.
In midfield, Morgan Schneiderlin (3) was pivotal in starting Southampton’s attacks at Selhurst Park, while Mauricio Pochettino has urged Didier Deschamps to consider the midfielder for his France squad at the World Cup.
“Until the final list is given, I think he has his chances,” said Pochettino. “I would actually invite the France national manager to come and see him direct, because I think he has the skill and the quality to play with the France side.”
Another Team of the Week debutant is Juan Mata (3.5) as the Spaniard showed glimpses of his quality against West Brom. Sam Lee commented from the Hawthorns: “Picked out Januzaj with a clever ball in the early stages, and linked up well with the youngster whenever they were in the same areas. One delightful piece of skill by the touchline. Helped create the second goal. Showed great defensive awareness by denying Chris Brunt a tap-in.”
Craig Noone (4) wins a place on the right flank following another promising appearance for Cardiff, while on the left wing, Adam Lallana (3.5) boosted his hopes of winning a place in England’s World Cup squad with another assured performance for Southampton.
Wayne Rooney (3.5) forms one part of our two-man attack. The England striker had a muted first half at the Hawthorns but sparked into life after the break to score his 11th Premier League goal of the season and set up Danny Welbeck for United’s third.
But our star man this week is Samuel Eto’o (4) who was the catalyst in Chelsea’s comfortable win over Tottenham. The Cameroon striker, who turns 33 (officially) on Monday, rolled back the years with a lively second-half display during which he opened the scoring before winning a penalty for Jose Mourinho’s side. His goal celebration was no doubt our pick of the week. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SAMUEL ETO’O
