Olympique de Marseille interested in signing Real Betis midfielder Achille Emana – Ligue 1 news
Reports in France suggest that French Ligue 1 giants, Olympique de Marseille, are interested in signing Cameroon international, Achille Emana, from La Liga side Real Betis.
The former Toulouse man was an integral part of the Betis side that recently won promotion to the Spanish top division. In the 2010/11 season, the 29-year-old midfielder was in fine form for the Andalucíans and scored 13 goals in 28 games.
The architect of Betis’ promotion to the La Liga is now being linked with a move to Rhone-based Olympique de Marseille, a club that has been monitoring Emana’s progress at the Spanish club for a long time.
However, it has been reported that Marseille would face stiff competition if they are to sign the attacking midfielder. Rumours suggest that English Premier League sides, Everton, Tottenham, Birmingham and Wigan Athletic are also looking to make a move for the coveted player.
Furthermore, newly-crowned Ligue 1 champions, LOSC Lille, are also looking to bring the player to Stade Metropole. According to Spanish media, Turkish giants Galatasaray have also contacted the Spanish side regarding the availability of Emana.
However, it has been suggested that Emana would only go for a club where he is able to play in European competitions. Marseille have automatically qualified for the 2011/12 edition of the UEFA Champions League and could lure in the Cameroonian international.
Imminent departure of Lucho Gonzalez will leave a big hole in the Marseille midfield, and Les Phoceens are headhunting for a replacement to El Comandante.
Jean-Claude Dassier, chairman of the Rhone club, has already recruited Morgan Amalfitano from FC Lorient, which means that Emana might find it hard to command a regular starting spot in the side. However, if rumours are true that playmaker Mathieu Valbuena might leave Stade Velodrome this summer, Didier Deschamps could consider bringing in the Cameroonian to the club in order to increase his options in the midfield.
The 29-year-old is currently in great form and might also choose to stay at Betis as the Andalucíans are reluctant to let go of a player who was so influential in Betis’ push for to La Liga promotion after a two-year absence.
